Here are some reviews on Cryptic Writings that I have got from some newspapers in Sweden and from some magazines.

Aftonbladet (Swedish newspaper)
Rating: 2/5

"I like Dave Mustaine's dark lyrics, the record is almost entirely a settlement with man's tries to devote himself to lifelong love (do I smell a divorce in the Mustaine home?) and on the other hand other selfdestructible phenomenon like drugs, something that Dave also have a clear view in. "I lied just a little when I need you" he sings in "Almost Honest". "God help me please, on my knees, betrayed by lust, we lied to each other so much" in "Trust". "I've seen the man use the needle, the needle use the man", about the man who died from an overdose. Musically, this record isn't as good as the previous (Youthanasia), but the overall impression is still strong."

"The most fanatic fans will call this a whimpy sell-out. Personally, I think Dave Mustaine & C:o has done the right thing, trying carefully to find new musical paths and partly found their way to a more melodious expression. (When the riffing comes to an end of the opening track "Trust", it's the old "Layla"-pattern by Clapton flashing by!!) Strong melodies have always been the bands weakness. But maybe the band is facing a new spring, and possibly a new audience."

    Metal Hammer
    Rating: 2/5

In Cryptic Writings Mustaine does an excellent job with the lyrics (as usual). He also is trying to break his drug habit and so he tells a strong "tale", if you will, about a man with a drug overdose (Use The Man). It also seems and though there is family difficulty in the Mustaine residence, as he is writing many songs about failed love, and relationships.

This review were sent to me from ADEL (/\) EBRAHEEM, Kuwai. Thanks alot!

    Nöjesguiden (Swedish Magazine)
    Rating: 2/6

Megadeth chocks with an album that's not completely unlistenable for the first time since Rust in Peace, that came out for about 1 000 years ago. Don't get me wrong, it's not good, but there's a couple of songs that not immediately stimulates the barfreflex, but instead make me sit and think that's it's good for Dave Mustaine that he finally cracked the code by how to write Metallica light-songs."
